Dozens of Lovelock families met on Elmhurst Avenue on Sunday afternoon, the last day of Frontier Days weekend.
They came to watch the weight carry, tractor pull and youth bike races. Many would compete for cash prizes.
People commented on the weather. The temperature hovered in the low nineties, but Elmhurst is known for its shade trees
Besides, the heatwave had passed and a gentle breeze comforted everyone.
The crowd also talked about the smoke from the distant wildfires, thick and pungent throughout much of northern Nevada.
In the weight carrying competition, the men packed 105 pounds of solid concrete under each arm, roughly equivalent to the heft of a baby elephant.
Women carried two 52 pounders, each about the weight of a small bale of hay.
The contestants lumbered up and down Elmhurst until their muscles gave out, and they dropped the weights. Richard Vasquez won first place in the men’s competition and walked away sixty dollars richer.
His wife, Whitney Vasquez, won the women’s contest.
Wyatt Hughes placed first in the youth competition. The runner-up spot went to his sister Emma.
Anna Happy came in third.
