The Frontier Day’s competitors agree that the most challenging part of a tractor pull is to get the thing going. However, on Sunday afternoon, they hauled the machines down Elmhurst Avenue as fast as they could. Some almost appeared to trot.

In conventional pulls, tractors pull weighted sleds. However, Lovelock practices the Oklahoma version of the sport where teams of men and women drag the machines. It’s not easy. Even athletic types appear winded after the effort.

It’s no wonder. At an estimated 3,500 pounds, the tractor weighs about as much as a smallish hippopotamus (3,000 to 7,000 pounds).
