There’s nothing like a three-peat.
The Lovelock Softball Association held its fourth league championship tournament on July 29. Thick N Wild walked away with their third consecutive title.
Many of the players have been with the LSA since it began in the summer of 2018. Nobody had heard of the coronavirus, and ‘delta’ was just the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. ‘Jim’s Point S’ won the first championship match.
In 2019, Jared Jensen took over as the president of the co-ed league, open to players 16 and over. That year, Thick N Wild wrested the title from Jim’s Point S (later called the Swingers). Suddenly, Thick N Wild had a title to defend.
Last summer, Thick N Wild beat the Swingers 18-14 in seven innings to claim the title. By then, Covid was a major player in everyone’s lives. The LSA made it through.
In this year’s semifinals, the Second Stringers beat the Wolfpack by one point in what Jensen called “the game of the tournament.” The Stringers scored three runs in the final inning, pulled off the win and entered the championship match where they suffered a lopsided loss against Thick N Wild (20-2).
The gold, silver and bronze went to Thick N Wild, the Second Stringers and Wolfpack. Weekend Warriors, Brew Crew, Modelo Time and Bats N Racks followed in fourth through seventh place.
“I would like to thank the LSA board (Amanda Holland, Phil Schmith, Jesse Canchola and Sean Luna). I’m also grateful to Tiffany Jensen, Russell Fecht, Tony Nelson, Mark and Eddie Paredes for all the time they put in,” said Jensen.
The coach saved his biggest thanks for last.
“I want to thank every single team for making this season run as smoothly as it did. It was probably the best we’ve had out there.” He says that every year.
