It took nearly seven hours to complete, as the Battle Mountain High School baseball team began its shortened six-week season at home on Saturday afternoon against Incline.
Both games of the doubleheader were decided by a run, including the nightcap going eight innings. Incline overcame a 7-3 deficit in game one to win 8-7 and came back for a 9-8 win in the second contest.
Battle Mountain picked up strong pitching performances from Anthony Silva, Marcos Jimenez and Anthony Del Rio.
In game one, Incline jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, only to see Battle Mountain score single runs in the first and second innings and a pair of runs in the third to lead 4-2.
The Highlanders got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth inning, but the Longhorns stretched out the lead to 7-3 after four innings. The third-run fourth inning was the last of the scoring for Battle Mountain.
Incline scored three times in the fifth inning and took the lead in the sixth with two more runs. Rallies by Battle Mountain came up short in the sixth and seventh innings.
Incline ran with that momentum in the night cap and scored six runs in the top of the first inning. The Highlanders added two more runs in the third inning to go in front, when the Longhorns came back with a six-run third inning to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Battle Mountain tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth inning but Incline answered back with a run in the top of the fifth.
The Longhorns tied the game in the sixth inning and both teams had runners in scoring position in the seventh, but could not produce the winning run.
Battle Mountain had a runner at second base in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the rally.
Incline scored the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth inning and held on for the sweep.
Battle Mountain hosted the Elko JV on Wednesday and results were not available at press time. Battle Mountain hosts West Wendover on Friday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and travel to Wells on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
