The Battle Mountain High School football team saw its schedule change in the final week of the season, with a trip to Dayton instead of Reno.
The Longhorns were originally scheduled to play Coral Academy at Wooster High School this past Saturday, but that game was canceled and the Longhorns took on Dayton instead.
For the fourth consecutive week, Battle Mountain found itself in a dog fight, but on the short end of the scoreboard. Dayton secured a 36-28 win in overtime, as the Longhorns finished 1-4 on the season.
“The kids played hard today,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “We saw that the 3A plays a bit higher speed and it took us the first half to adjust to it.”
Dayton took opening kickoff and drove down the field for a score and an 8-0 lead to start out the day. The score stayed there until midway through the second quarter when Battle Mountain’s Anthony Silva hit Terrance Fetterly for a touchdown. Brice Domagala added the 2-point pass catch making the score 8-8 where it stayed until halftime.
The Dust Devils added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 20-8, as the Battle Mountain offense struggled to get going.
However, in the fourth quarter, Battle Mountain got rolling as Silva ran in a 15-yard run. The 2-point conversion failed, making the score 20-14 Dayton.
The Dust Devils then scored, pushing their lead to 28-14, but the Longhorns weren’t done yet. In the middle of the fourth quarter, Sean Bengoa added a touchdown catch on a throw from Silva. Once again, the conversion failed and Dayton led 28-20.
After forcing a Dayton fumble Silva, ran in a touchdown and the tying 2-point conversion, knotting the score at 28 with two minutes to go.
The Battle Mountain defense stopped Dayton’s attempt as time expired and sent the game to overtime.
Dayton had the ball first in overtime and scored on its second play on a touchdown pass and they added the 2-point conversion for a 36-28 lead.
Battle Mountain saw their comeback end when Silva was intercepted on the Longhorns’ second play in overtime.
“This group has put so much effort into every game, they never quit and battle to the end all the time,” Domagala said.
