The Pershing County soccer team scored five goals between the two games they played this week.
That brings them to 23 goals, so far, for the season. To score in soccer, the player must avoid ten defenders and get past the other team’s goalie.
It takes teamwork and communication. That’s why, win or lose, each goal is a victory.
It’s been a short but busy season for the Mustangs with back-to-back games at home and on the road.
PCHS sweeps
Battle Mountain
Last Wednesday, Mach. 31, Pershing County traveled to Battle Mountain. The Mustangs won (4-1) with goals from Kylee Fuller, Hannah Gonzalez and Mikayla Leavitt. Connie Kersnowski and Fuller assisted.
It was the second match of the season for the Longhorns and Mustangs. Pershing hosted Battle Mountain on March 17, winning 4-2. Each time, Pershing scored three of its goals in the second half.
Pershing County drops road game to Sage Ridge
Saturday, Apr. 3, Pershing traveled to Sage Ridge. This time the Mustangs lost 1-2.
Kersnowski scored Pershing’s goal in the last two minutes of the game on an assist from Fuller.
It was Pershing County’s first contest with the Sage Ridge Scorpions, and they faced some obstacles.
The field was smaller than they’re accustomed to, about half the size. The heat also challenged girls used to playing in the fall.
Because Sage Ridge did not have a full team, Pershing County agreed to play down. In short, everything was topsy-turvy.
“The girls adapted well and played hard,” said asst. coach Eva Matuszyk.
With the loss to Sage Ridge, the Mustangs stand at 4-1-2.
On Wed., Apr 7, Pershing hosted Incline. Results were not available at press time. There’s more excitement to come, including senior night.
On Friday, the soccer team hosts West Wendover at 4 p.m.
It will be the Mustangs' last home game of the year. They’ll say goodbye to Connie Kersnowski and Yasmin Zaldivar, both graduating within weeks.
It will be Pershing’s second meeting with West Wendover. On March 19, they beat them 7-0 on the road.
Pershing County ends its season in Zephyr Cove on Saturday against Whittell. They hosted Whittell on March 20, losing 8-0.
The soccer team loves playing for its fans and hopes for a big turnout this Friday.
