Jace Martin Hinds, age 31, was recently sent to serve a 19-60 month prison sentence after pleading no contest to one category C felony count of battery with substantial bodily harm.
The potential penalties for the category C felony include up to five years in prison, a maximum $10,000 fine, eligibility for probation and possible restitution owed to any applicable victim(s).
Hinds’ attorney Humboldt County Public Defender Matthew Stermitz asked the court to allow Hinds to complete probation rather than prison and participate in court-appointed treatment programming.
Hinds told the court that since the incident he got off of drugs on his own, had a job and was previously seeking counseling in Carson City.
The victim in the incident gave a victim impact statement to the court. She said that her injuries were extensive enough to warrant 7.5 hours of surgery that resulted in her having a metal hip and metal plate in her arm and 3.5 months of physical therapy.
The victim said that she accumulated $170,000 in medical bills which were paid by insurance and a state program, meaning that she was not seeking any restitution and that she just hopes Hinds is able to leave drugs behind in his life.
The court ordered Hinds to pay a $3 DNA collection fee, $25 administrative assessment fee, $250 public defender fee and carry out a 19-60 month prison sentence with 85 days credit for time served.
