The Lowry High School track and field team opened its year last Saturday with a league meet at Elko High School.
The Lowry girls finished second in the team standings with 95 points, while Spring Creek was first at 198. Elko (94), Battle Mountain (49) and Eureka (48) rounded out the top five.
The Buckaroo boys were third in the team standings with 100 points. Spring Creek (192) and Elko (177) were first and second, respectively.
Lowry senior Jasper Glasgow swept the throwing events on the day. He won the shot put with a toss of 41 feet, 6.25 inches and the discus at 134-1. Both throws would have placed in the top eight last year’s state championships.
Fellow senior Colby Terry won the pole vault, as he cleared the bar at 10-6. Colby’s vault would have placed him eighth at last year’s state meet. Freshmen teammates Shaun Gilliland (8-6) and Kaid Sanchez (7-6) were fourth and sixth, respectively.
Omar Castaneda led three Lowry runners in the top seven of the 200 meters. Castaneda, a sophomore, was second in the race with a time of 24.49 seconds.
Ben Draunidalo was third at 24.81 and Jesus Leon was seventh in a time of 25.46. In addition, Draunidalo was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.72.
Robert Rangel was the runner-up in the 1,600 meters, as he stopped the watch at 5:05.7, a personal best for him. The junior was third in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:28.6, another personal best.
Sophomore Tyler Morrison was fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.3 and Gunner Bradley (5-2) and Iysis Arriola (5-2) were sixth and seventh in the high jump.
The boys 4x800 relay placed second with a time of 9:27.1 and the 4x100 relay was third at 49.08.
On the girls side, sophomore Emily Backus brought home two first-place finishes.
She won the 100-meter dash with a unofficial hand time of 11.55. Backus also won the long jump with a mark of 16-4.5.
Fellow sophomore Jovi Kuskie won the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:35.7, a personal best for her. She was second in the 300-meter hurdles at 49.58 and ran the 100-meter hurdles for the first time and placed third in a time of 16.81.
Her time would placed her sixth in last year’s state meet.
Adia Bengochea was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:38.7 and fourth in the 1,600 meters at 6:00.4. Hannah Whitted turned in a runner-up finish in the high jump, as she cleared the bar at 4-10.
Hadley Hatch was fifth in the high jump at 4-4 and fifth in the pole vault with a leap of 5-6. Ashley Rookstool was fourth in the pole vault at 6-0.
Lesley Martinez led the Lowry girls throwers, placing fifth in the discus with a toss of 74-9 and the junior was seventh in the shot put at 25-2. Saree Millikan was sixth in the discus with a throw of 69-3 and Emily Shoenecker was eighth in the discus at 64-11, a personal best for her.
Lowry travels to Yerington on Saturday for the Yerington Relays at 9 a.m.
