WPD, community pays tribute to detective

A procession honored Winnemucca Police Department Detective and community hero Matt Morgan, 47, who passed away unexpectedly while at work on Thursday, June 25, 2020, of apparent natural causes. 

The procession made its way down Winnemucca Boulevard and encountered  flags, salutes, hands on hearts and countless people standing along the route to pay respect to Morgan and those who loved him. Morgan was being escorted from the Medical Examiner’s office in Washoe County to Sonoma Funeral Home. His escort included vehicles from the Winnemucca Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Department of Public Safety, Elko County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department, Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Fallon Police Department, Churchill County Sheriff’s Office, Winnemucca Rural Fire Department, Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada State Park Ranger, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Nevada Honor Guard, Lander County Sheriff’s Office and more. 

“I cannot put into words what your support has meant to us here at WPD and to Matt’s Family,” said WPD Chief Dave Garrison. “I know that I speak for them when I say that your love and support has brought them great strength, and will help to carry them through this very difficult time.” 

Morgan served at the Winnemucca Police Department for 26 years as a detective and in several other capacities and programs. 

“Winnemucca Police Department administration staff and fellow officers, and City of Winnemucca officials and staff extend their sympathy and condolences to the family of Detective Morgan,” said WPD in a press release.
