Matthew Thomas Morgan passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2020 at the age of 47.
Matt was born on August 9, 1972 in Reno, Nevada to Ted and Yvette Morgan at Saint Mary’s Hospital. As an only child, he grew up with his cousins that were more like brothers and sisters.
Matt graduated from Hug High School in 1990 and was an accomplished athlete. He attended Truckee Meadows Community College and completed the police academy before starting his career in law enforcement.
He was sworn into the Winnemucca Police Department in October 1994 and served in numerous capacities and programs, including being a K9 officer with his partner Duco and contributing to the DARE program. Lastly, a Detective who strived for justice.
After 25 years of serving in law enforcement, he was looking forward to retirement at such a young age that would allow him to pursue other endeavors.
Matt married the love of his life, Cassie, on July 19, 2014, they welcomed their daughter Vena Dee Morgan two years later and he got to have his long-awaited first Christmas as Santa.
He was Cassie’s best friend, soul mate, and daddy to Vena, who he called “daughter”. His girls were the light of his life and his world.
As an extraordinary daddy, he enjoyed teaching Vena new things, watching her grow, taking her golfing and giving her everything she wanted.
He was somebody that people looked up to for everything he accomplished, including how he was always there for those around him who needed anything.
Once he had Vena he was her hero and the light of her life.
Matt was a passionate sports enthusiast, golfer, bowler, poker player and loved the Pittsburgh Steelers. Always striving to be the best competitor, he bowled many perfect 300 games and won the 2017 Winnemucca Amateur Champion Golf Tournament that he had long-hoped for on his first Father’s Day.
Matt enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, especially in the Northern Nevada wilderness with his family on their annual trips.
He always had a way to make those around him feel like the most important person in the room and made sure everyone was taken care of.
He deeply loved all of his family, including extended, law enforcement and the friends who were considered family and they all loved him very much.
He had a larger than life presence that was always the center of attention and never turned down a bet.
His daily phone call to his dad will be greatly missed, where he always said he was “just living the dream”. His mom will miss the messages from her “Sam”.
Matt is survived by his wife Cassie, daughter Vena, parents Ted and Yvette and a large extended family.
Services will be held on August 9, 2020, on his birthday at a location to be announced.
