Barbara C. Powell passed away on June 13, 2020, at home in Winnemucca, Nevada, at the age of 75. Barbara was born November 4, 1944, to Robert O. Powell and Dorothy Stakel Powell. Barbara lived most of her life in Winnemucca in the house built by her grandfather.
After high school, she attended the University of Nevada, Reno, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Barbara was a published author. She wrote a column called “Looking Back” in the Humboldt Sun for a number of years. Her novel, Simple Justice, was released in April 2013.
She loved Nevada history and volunteered for many years at the Humboldt Museum. She also served on the board of directors as Vice President of the North Central Nevada Historical Society/Humboldt Museum.
Barbara loved going into the desert digging for old bottles and collecting rocks. She also loved to garden and to share the food she grew. She was a helper, loved listening to people, and the number of rescue dogs she took in was always changing and growing.
She is survived by her sisters, Ann, Kathy, and Patricia; and her brothers, Norman, Wayne, and Gene; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Ruth and Marie.
Graveside services for Barbara C. Powell will be held at the Winnemucca Cemetery on June 29, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it was Barbara’s wish to have donations made to the Humboldt Museum.
Barbara’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Tony and Jennifer Fernandez for their love and care of Barbara.
