Lowry’s Bergenheier heading to Lamar Community College

Ever since he was  a little kid, Lowry High School senior Brooks Bergenheier has loved baseball.

Bergenheier will be one step closer to his favorite team, the Colorado Rockies, as he has committed to play for Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo., this upcoming school year.

Bergenheier started the process with Lamar with coach Ben Buck. However, in that time, Buck left for a player developmental position with the New York Yankees.

Robert Carrasco, an assistant with Lamar, took over as head coach. Carrasco saw Bergenheier had interest in the team and said he was welcome to join the squad. Bergenheier will likely redshirt his first year at the school, but would also have chance to play as a freshman.

Bergenheier had his senior season cut short, playing in just six games this past spring. Lowry was looking to make a trip back to the postseason for the first time in a number of years, but the season ended after splitting games with Spring Creek in March.

Bergenheier was batting .278 with five hits, three runs and three RBI in 18 at bats.

“With the season ending early that changed a bunch of things around,” Bergenheier said. “I really didn’t get a chance to see other schools. Lamar has been contacting me for a couple of years. Going there makes the ending of this year a little better. We were hoping for a good season and going to state was our ultimate goal.”

Bergenheier also had interest from Antelope College in Lancaster, Calif.

Lamar is a member of the NJCAA Region IX and was 7-12 this past spring, before the season was canceled because on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Runnin’ Lopes play in a conference with McCook Community College, Western Nebraska College, Southeast Community College, Trinidad State Junior College, Otero Junior College and Northeast Community College.

Bergenheier, will be close to family in Colorado, as his grandparents live in the Denver area.

“I will have family close by, so that makes it better,” Bergenheier. I am familiar with the area and I think it’s a good place for me.”
