Racers know exactly what to do when they see a green flag.

They slam on the gas pedal and take off. The first flags of the 2020 season will drop at the Lovelock Speedway on July 31 and Aug. 1.

The races begin at 7 p.m.

On Aug. 22 the competition starts at 11 a.m. Later that night, at 6 p.m., Fallon’s Rattlesnake Raceway features tough trucks and kid’s rides.

The speedways support one another’s events. The final race of the 2020 season is on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.

“What boosts one boosts us all,” said longtime Lovelock Speedway enthusiast Lisa Taylor of Elko.

She and her chiropractor husband Wade make racing a family affair at several tracks, including Lovelock’s and Fallon’s.

“There will be changes for both competitors and spectators due to COVID-19,” says a Lovelock Speedway spokesperson. “Everyone will have to have their temperatures taken upon arrival as well as fill out a brief questionnaire.”

“We ask that all attendees practice social distancing as much as possible,” she adds.

To facilitate, some areas of the grandstand are closed to seating. Spectators will see marks indicating where to sit.

Nevada will stay in Phase Two until at least the end of July, since COVID-19 cases have accelerated in the past few weeks.

Governor Sisolak anticipates that youth sports will open at some point in phase two.

However, for now, recreational opportunities are somewhat limited. The Lovelock Speedway hopes to see new faces around its quarter mile dirt track, a five-minute drive from town.

“The ‘new reality’ we’re living in isn’t fun for anyone.” says the Speedway’s Facebook page. “However, we hope everyone understands we’re trying to do our part to keep racing.”
