Remember the primary objectives of rural basketball are to teach the players the fundamental skills of basketball, including the rules, to practice good sportsmanship (that means it should be exhibited by coaches, players, and fans), and to have fun while learning to lose as well as win.
With that being said this past weekend’s games were hosted by McDermitt. They had Indian tacos, popcorn, and a full concession stand. The referees were Sean Millikan and Jeff Thompson.
The day started off at 9 a.m. between McDermitt White and Blue in Division II action. Daphne Smart coached White and Ryan Smart coached Blue. It was a great game with only a four-point difference at half and a five-point difference in the end.
In the first quarter, Dylan Palmer on White scored lay-in after lay-in for 10 points.
As a matter of fact, he was the only one to score for White during the first quarter. Blue’s Ebony Crutcher scored two shots for four and Serenja Crutcher missed two free throws, and then sunk an additional shot for two points.
At the end of first quarter White was ahead 10-6. In the second quarter No. 21 scored another jump shot for two points and Stephen Brown put one off the glass for two more points.
Malissa Hunter (35) for White put in two 2-point shots for four points, Bryson Hunter added six points and Chasen Wilkinson made a shot for two more, bringing the score at the half to White 14 and Blue 18.
In the third quarter the White’s Dylan Palmer, was fouled on a 2-point shot, which went in, he sunk the additional free throw for three points. Then he went on to score two other shots for four more and Dante Murrah, put in his second free throw shot for one point, bringing White’s score to 22 at the end of the third quarter.
The Blue also put eight more points on the scoreboard during the third quarter. McDermitt Blue’s Cayden Crutcher, Samuel Crutcher and Serenja Crutcher all scored a 2-point shot for six points and Ebony Crutcher scored a free throw and two point shot for three points, ending the third quarter with nine more points, bringing their score up to 27.
The fourth quarter slowed down, as the White’s Treal Scott made two points and Blue’s Bryson Hunter made two points also. In the end White had 24 and Blue had 29 for the win.
The McDermitt White played the next game against the Paradise Panthers’ Division II team.
The first quarter was a close one, as the White’s Treal Scott, made two shots for four points and Dylan Palmer made four points as well.
Paradise’s Jaxson Morgan scored a 2-point shot and Cooper Hoagland made a shot, followed by two free throws and another shot for six points.
At the end of the first quarter they were tied up at 8. In the second quarter, the White did not score. Morgan scored another shot for two points and Hoagland put in another two point shot, followed by one of two free throws and another lay in for five points, rounding out the first half 8 to 15 with Paradise in the lead.
In the third quarter, Stephen Brown made a 2-point shot for and Treal Scott sunk 1-of4 free throw shots for a point, bringing White’s score to 11 for third quarter.
Paradise’s Cooper Hoagland was on a mission, making three shots for six points, and Morgan put in another shot for two more.
With eight additional points, Paradise pulled further away, ending the third quarter with 23. Hoagland and Morgan continued into the fourth quarter, putting in another shot for two and Hoagland with a free throw and 2-point shot. McDermitt White’s Treal Scott put in two shots for four points and Dylan Palmer made two free throws and another shot for a total of four.
Even with McDermitt’s eight points and Paradise’s five, the Panthers kept the lead, ending the game 28 and Bulldogs White 19.
Next up, the McDermitt Blue played the Denio/Fields Outlaws.
In the first quarter Dylan Palmer sank a 3-point shot, followed by a 2-point shot by Ebony Crutcher. Denio/Fields’ Maddox Norris put two points on the board and Oscar Maley put in two free throws for two more points.
It was McDermitt Blue 5 and Denio /Fields 4 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Bryson Hunter scored a shot, as did C. Crutcher and then Cayden Crutcher put in two free throws also.
At the half the half Blue had 11 and the Outlaws were down by 1 with 10. In the third quarter, the Blue added two more points, bringing their score up to 13.
The Outlaw’s Bergen Hagbom put in two shots for four and Norris hit another shot for two points, ending the third quarter with the Outlaws ahead 16-13.
They did not hold the lead though, as the Blue’s Hunter put in three shots for six points and Malissa Hunter put in two more shots.
With 10 additional points, that brought Blue’s score up to 23. The Outlaw’s Margie Adamson sank the only shot for Denio/Fields during fourth quarter. At the conclusion of the game the score was 23 Blue to 18 Outlaws, as the home team took the win.
The Division II Outlaws then took the floor versus the Paradise Panthers. Paradise came out in the first quarter strong with Walker Smith scoring three shots and Robert Depaoli put in another shot for two points. Denio/Fields’ team spread out the shots amongst more players with Lars Hagbom, Eli Maley and Blake Powers all making a 2-point shots.
Plus, Powers sank his first free throw shot. At the end of the first quarter Paradise had 8 and Denio/Fields 7.
The Panthers were already in foul trouble at the beginning of the second quarter and Hagbom benefited with a 1-and-1 free throw shot as they were in the bonus.
He made his first shot and Emmalee Estrada made a shot for two more. Points. The Panthers made two more shots and by the half Paradise still had the lead 12-10.
In the third quarter, the Outlaws ran hard and crashed the boards scoring three shots for six points. E. Maley made two shots and Estrada made a shot and her second of two free throws for three more.
The Panthers’ Depaoli and Smith answered with two more shots, but at the end of third quarter Outlaws had 23 and the Panthers 16. In the fourth quarter both teams scored eight more points, but the Outlaws kept the lead 31-24 in the end.
At 1 p.m., Denio/Fields’ Division II team came back on the floor to compete with McDermitt White.
This was an intense game from beginning to end. McDermitt’s Dylan Palmer made two shots in the first quarter for the Bulldogs.
Maddox Norris scored a shot and Bergen Hagbom made two 2-point shots and two free throws for six points. At the end of the first quarter the score was 4 White and 8 Outlaws.
Palmer scored another shot and a free throw in the second quarter for the White Bulldog team and B. Hagbom made three more 2-point shots and a free throw.
At the half, the score was 7 McDermitt White Bulldogs and 17 Denio/Fields Outlaws. The third quarter saw Palmer make four more points with a 2-point shot and two free throws and Treal Scott made a 2-point shot, bringing McDermitt White’s score up to 13.
Bergen was on fire for Denio/Fields and scored four more 2-oint shots through fast breaks and great teamwork. The Outlaws now had 25 by the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter McDermitt White’s No. 40 scored four points, Layton Dick made a shot for two points, Palmer put up three more shots and Stephen Brown made a 2-point shot.
Denio/Fields’ Maddox Norris made a 2-point shot and both B. Hagbom and Oscar Maley made the second free throw for one point each. In the fourth quarter White outscored the Outlaws, but the Outlaws kept the lead ending the game 27 McDermitt White and 29 Denio/Fields.
The last game of the day was a Division I contest between McDermitt Bulldogs and the Paradise Panthers. Stats for the game were as follows.
The Bulldogs’ AJ Farmer had two points, Jeremiah Horn (6,), Reese Wilkinson (7), Kiarra Crutcher (6), Warrick Crutcher (4), Cierra Smart (4), Jimmy Choate (2), Eli Northrup (4) and Reign Crutcher had six for a total of 41.
Paradise Valley’s Edgar Duarte made two free throws for two points and Sarah Buckingham scored a 2-point shot for a total of four. At the end of the game McDermitt had 41 and Paradise Valley 4.
It was a very busy weekend with a lot of games due to the make-up game from last week and the fact it was a double header for the Division II teams.
