The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team headed out last weekend for its longest road trip of the season and came back home with a split of two league games for Lake Tahoe.
Battle Mountain started the trip in Incline on Friday night and suffered a 48-18 loss to the league-leading Highlanders. Incline jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and held Battle Mountain to single digits in every quarter.
The Highlanders extended the lead to 28-6 at halftime and led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter.
Addi Slaybaugh had seven points, five rebounds and two steals for the Lady Longhorns and Brooke Ripley added three points.
“We turned the ball over way to many times,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We did not shoot very well and their size was a big issue for us.”
Battle Mountain routs North Tahoe
It was a much different story on Saturday afternoon, as Battle Mountain bounced back for a 46-16 win over North Tahoe, in Tahoe City, Calif.
The Lady Longhorns raced out to a 25-8 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Kaybrie Nield had 13 points and nine rebounds for Battle Mountain and Slaybaugh added nine points, seven rebounds and four steals. Ripley contributed seven points in the victory.
“I was real happy with the way we played, after Friday’s game and being on the road,” added the coach. “The girls did a good job on both ends of the floor.”
Battle Mountain traveled to Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. Battle Mountain is back on the road Friday to play rival Pershing County at 6 p.m. The road trip concludes on Saturday at Silver Stage at 2 p.m.
The Lady Longhorns are currently fourth in the Northern 2A at 6-4 and 14-6 overall. Incline and White Pine are tied for first at 9-1 and Yerington is third at 9-2. Pershing County sits in fifth at 5-5 and West Wendover holds the final playoff spot at 2-6.
The top six teams qualify for the Northern 2A Regional Championships in Lovelock on Feb. 20-22. The top two teams receive first-round byes on the first day of the tournament.
