In the last tournament of the regular season, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team traveled to Fernley to participate in the 20th annual Walter Marrietta Vaquero Classic.
“This is a great tournament,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “It gives us one final chance to go against the best 4A and 3A teams in Northern Nevada before we begin the stretch run for the state tournament.”
The Longhorns wrestled tough over the two days and at the end finished in sixth place out of 29 teams with 131 points. Spanish Springs, the two-time reigning 4A state champion, won the tournament with 258 points.
Host Fernley was second with 211 points and Lowry (178.50), Carson (147) and Yerington (143) rounded out the top five.
“This was a chance for our older kids to get one last look at some quality competition from larger schools, as well as evaluating our younger kids against top competition,” added Domagala.
Leading the way for the green team were Jordan Gonzalez 138 pounds) and Thomas Amezcua (220) as they were each runners-up in their respective weight classes.
Declan McClary came home with a bronze medal for his third-place finish at 126 pounds, Lyle Whitten took fourth place at 285 pounds, while Stone Whitlock (152) and Brice Domagala (195) ended the weekend in fifth place.
Julio Torres (120), Jose N. Guizar (145), Kasen Taylor (160) and Dalton Shake (170) finished within one match of the podium.
Asher Bundrock, Scott Wall and Alex Jones all won matches for the Longhorns.
“These guys wrestled tough and looked good all weekend,” Domagala said. “They battled in all their matches and just needed a break here or there to get into the later rounds on Saturday. I expect some big things out of them in the coming weeks.”
The Longhorns host the Northern Nevada 2A Duals Championship starting Friday at 1 p.m. in the BMHS gym.
Following the high school action the local gym continues being the hot spot of wrestling in Northeastern Nevada as the Battle Mountain Wrestling Club hosts their annual USA Wrestling tournament on Sunday starting at 9 a.m.
