McDermitt boys basketball team splits with Carlin, Owyhee

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team hit the road last weekend for a pair of Eastern 1A games and came home with a split. The Bulldogs are now 2-4 in league play and 4-13 overall.

McDermitt was in Carlin on Friday, Jan. 17, and used a quick start and finish to beat the Railroaders 54-37. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter, but could not expand the margin into halftime, as the Railroaders cut the gap to 27-18.

McDermitt extended the lead to double-digits in the third quarter and used an 15-8 spurt in the final eight minutes of play to hold on for the win. The Bulldogs left a handful of points out of the scorebook as well, going just 14-of-30 from the free throw line.  

Tristan Bitt and Enrique Villalobos paced McDermitt with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Bitt grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with two assists and a steal and Villalobos had eight rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Braeden Ramsey contributed six points and two rebounds, Alex Navarro and Waylon Nino had three points each, Kaden Crutcher two and Steele Crossley one point. Crossley had six rebounds, one assist and one steal and Nino had eight steals, five rebounds and one assist.



Bulldogs fall to Braves

The road trip continued on Saturday in Owyhee, where the Bulldogs lost 62-42 to the Braves.

Owyhee doubled up McDermitt in the first quarter 22-11 and increased the advantage to 40-20 at halftime. The lead grew to over 25 points in the third quarter, as the Braves came out of the halftime break with a 14-7 run to lead 54-27.

Villalobos had a team-high 12-points and seven rebounds and Navarro added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists. Bitt netted eight points to go with three rebounds and a steal, Crutcher had four points, Ramsey three, Crossley two and Nino one. Nino added five rebounds and four steals and Crossley had five rebounds. 

McDermitt traveled to Eureka on Friday night and results were not available at press time. The Bulldogs host Lund this upcoming Friday at 4 p.m. and travel to Jackpot on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2:30 p.m.
