The McDermitt High School girls basketball team began a four-game road trip this past weekend in Elko County.
The Lady Bulldogs collected a 61-21 win at Carlin on Friday, Jan. 17, but lost 55-43 to Owyhee on Saturday afternoon and now sit at 2-3 in the Eastern 1A and 8-6 overall.
McDermitt blanked winless Carlin the first quarter, racing out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back.
The advantage grew to 31-5 at halftime and the contest was played with a running clock in the second half under the NIAA 35-point mercy rule.
The Lady Bulldogs closed out the game with a 16-6 spurt in the final eight minutes of play.
McDermitt’s road trip moved them to Owyhee on Saturday for a match-up with its rival. The two teams have been atop the Eastern 1A for a number of years.
In a close first half, McDermitt held a slim one -point lead after a quarter of play and increased the margin to three points, 20-17 at halftime. After scoring just 17 points in the first half, Owyhee surpassed that total in the third quarter with an 18-14 run to lead 35-34.
The Braves pulled away in the fourth quarter with an 18-9 run to come back for the victory.
Wells leads the Eastern 1A at 4-0, followed by Eureka (3-1), Owyhee (2-1) and McDermitt (2-3). The top four teams advance to the regional tournament against the Southern 1A on Feb. 13-15 at a site to be determined.
McDermitt traveled to Eureka on Friday night and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bulldogs travel to Jackpot on Saturday, Feb. 1, for its final road trip of the regular season. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
McDermitt is back home for a non-conference game against Jordan Valley, Ore., at 4 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 6. McDermitt remains home to play Carlin on Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. and Owyhee on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
