Lara places second for Lowry gold at Douglas Invitational

The Lowry High School wrestling team split up its squad at the Douglas Invitational in Minden, with the Lowry gold finishing 14th with 38 points.

The Buckaroo blue won with 202.50 points, beating out second-place Fernley (193). Reno was a distant third with 119 points and Yerington (103.50) and McQueen (99) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Denzel Lara was second in the 135-pound division, picking up a pair of victories.

Lara started the tournament by beating teammate Emilio Magana and Spanish Springs’ Grant Larson in the semifinals. Lara lost to the championship to Spanish Springs’ Lance Bozarth by a 6-1 decision.

Damon Fetty had a busy day on his way to a third-place finish at 149 pounds. The freshman won his first match of the day by pin over Spanish Springs’ Braden Martinez. Fetty lost in the quarterfinals to Reno’s Hunter Valentin, which started his comeback through the consolation bracket.

Fetty knocked off Pershing County’s Noel Zaldivar 5-3 in the consolation second round and pinned Spanish Springs’ Jacob Kahumeku and Fernley’s Ashton Brownell to get in the third-place match. Fetty scored a takedown in overtime to beat Reno’s James Miller 8-6 for third place.

David Hunter was third at 135 pounds. The sophomore had to go the distance in his first two matches winning by decision over Reed’s Adan Aquino in the first round. Hunter lost to Spanish Springs’ Lance Bozarth 10-1, but bounced back to beat Magana and Reno’s Mason Miller for third. 

Hunter Smith reached the consolation semifinals at 285 points to score 10 points for the Buckaroos. Smith opened the day by pinning Tonopah’s Conner Roberts with six seconds left in the first period. Smith had to wrestler teammate Kole Mattson in the second round, with Mattson winning.

It was another teammate battle in the consolation bracket, as Smith beat Boni Jacinto. Smith advanced to the consolation semifinals after beating Reno’s Achilles Boney.   

Diego Reyes (120), Braden Hammagren (126) and Benton Baker (132) also scored points for the Buckaroos.

Lowry travels to Spring Creek this weekend for the Kiwanis Invitational, which will feature more than 30 teams from Nevada and Idaho.

Lowry will be at home on Wednesday for a dual with Yerington at 5 p.m. Coach Brooks also noted that Pershing County may come down to the dual as well with its six wrestlers.
