The McDermitt High School girls basketball team opened league play last weekend in Wells and were back on the road this past Tuesday for a non-conference game against Jordan Valley, Ore.
In the league opener against Wells, McDermitt junior Katie Crutcher scored 26 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 42 points in a 44-42 defeat to the Leopards.
McDermitt took early control with a 12-7 run in the first quarter, but that advantage was erased as Wells took a 22-19 lead at halftime, on the strength of a 15-7 spurt in the second quarter.
The contest was back-and-forth from there, with neither team able to pull away. The Lady Bulldogs were able to cut the deficit to 34-32 at the start of the fourth quarter, but could not get any closer.
Each team scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, with Wells holding on for the win the final seconds.
In addition to her team-high 26 points, Crutcher added three assists and two steals.
Takayla Antonio netted 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Jasmine Northrup and Rylee Wilkinson had four and two points, respectively. Northrup also grabbed six rebounds and Meianah Bitt and Cayla Crutcher each had two rebounds.
McDermitt was back on the road on Tuesday night on Oregon and suffered a 72-43 loss to drop to 6-4 on the season and remaining 0-1 in the Eastern 1A.
McDermitt hosted Wells on Friday night and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bulldogs are back home on Saturday to play Jackpot at 1 p.m.
McDermitt heads out on the road for the remainder of January, playing at Carlin on Friday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. and Owyhee on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Lady Bulldogs travel to Eureka on Friday, Jan. 24, for a 6 p.m. tip.
