The McDermitt High School girls basketball team spent a good amount of time on its Christmas break in the Bay Area at the end of December.

The Lady Bulldogs were in Walnut Creek, Calif., for the West Coast Jamboree for three games against much larger California schools. McDermitt was part of the Sapphire bracket, where it finished sixth.

McDermitt opened with Northgate (Walnut Creek, Calif.), on Friday, Dec. 27, and suffered its first loss of the season in a 75-44 defeat to the Broncos.

McDermitt traded baskets with Northgate in the first quarter and trailed 20-16 after eight minutes of play.

However, the Broncos pulled away from there, using a 19-5 run in the second quarter to lead 39-21 at halftime.

The Broncos extended the advantage to 57-32 after three quarters of play and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 18-12 in the fourth quarter.

Jasmine Northrup had a team-high 13 points to go with three steals and two rebounds. Katie Crutcher joined her in double figures with 12 points. In addition, the junior grabbed four rebounds and had two steals.

Takayla Antonio netted nine points and had four rebounds and a steal, Meianah Bitt had six points and Rylee Wilkinson and Kalli Sam each had two points.

McDermitt (6-2) got back on the winning track on Saturday, Dec. 28, with a 56-53 victory over Los Banos, Calif.

The contest was evenly played throughout, with the score tied after the first quarter (15-15) and at halftime (26-26).

The Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead by a point at the end of the third quarter and held on for the victory, outscoring the Tigers 16-14 in the final eight minutes of play.

Northrup scored nearly half of McDermitt’s 56 points, with 25 off of three 3-point field goals. The senior added seven rebounds, a steal and an assist.

Crutcher joined her in double figures with 12 points and five rebounds and younger sister and freshman Cayla Crutcher had six points. Bitt added five points, Sam four and Antonio two.

After a day off to enjoy the Bay Area, McDermitt returned to the floor on Monday to close out the tournament against Kennedy (Sacramento, Calif.). The Cougars controlled the game from the start in the 62-14 win.
