Lady Bulldogs drop home finale to Vandals

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team closed out its regular season last Friday on its home floor with a 41-29 loss to Eureka.

The first half saw both offenses struggle to put points on the board, with neither team scoring more than nine points in each of the first two quarters.

Eureka held a slim one-point lead after eight minutes of play, when McDermitt battled back to go in front 15-14 at halftime.

The difference on the night proved to be the third quarter, where the Vandals came out of the break with a 13-4 run in the third quarter to pull ahead for good at 27-19.

The Lady Bulldogs had their best-scoring quarter in the fourth with 10 points, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit in the 12-point loss. McDermitt finished the regular season at 10-10 overall and 4-6 in the Eastern 1A.

McDermitt finished fourth in the Eastern 1A and will take on the Southern 1A top-seed Pahranagat Valley on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Basic High School in Las Vegas in the opening round of the East/South Regional Championships.

Eureka and Indian Springs is the other game in McDermitt’s top part of the bracket. The two winners play on Friday at Clark High School at 3:30 p.m.

Wells and Green Valley Christian and Beatty and Owyhee play in the other first-round games on Thursday. The winners play at 6:20 p.m. on Friday at Clark.

The championship game is Saturday at noon at Faith Lutheran High School.
