MCDERMITT — The McDermitt High School boys basketball team split a pair of league games at home last weekend, defeating Carlin 51-16 on Friday night and losing 75-49 to Owyhee on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 6-16 overall and 4-7 in the Eastern 1A and have been eliminated from playoff contention.
McDermitt had to shake off a slow start to Carlin, before pulling away for the 35-point win.
The Bulldogs led by just a point, 10-9, after eight minutes of play and started to stretch the advantage out in the second quarter on the strength of a 19-6 run.
McDermitt put the game out of reach with a 20-1 run in the third quarter and Carlin scored just one point in the second half. The Railroaders managed just six field goals on the night.
Enrique Villalobos had a game-high 17 points, all of those coming in the first three quarters, as he outscored Carlin by himself. The sophomore added 10 rebounds and six steals.
Fellow sophomore, Tristan Bitt added 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Freshman Kaden Crutcher scored seven points to go with six steals, one assist and one rebound. Braeden Ramsey netted five points, four rebounds and three steals. Alex Navarro had four points and Steele Crossley and Waylon Nino had two points apiece.

McDermitt officially saw its playoff hopes come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 75-49 loss to Owyhee. The Braves jumped out to a 9-0 lead sin the first quarter, which saw a fast pace, with a number of turnover and fouls by both teams.
McDermitt scored its points of the day on two free throws by Tristan Bitt with 1:35 left in the quarter.
The Bulldogs hit their first field goal of the contest, when Bitt hit a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer to cut the deficit to 12-5.
Owyhee opened up a 20-5 advantage to start the second quarter with a 7-0 run, when Bitt stopped the run with his seventh point of the night. The lead grew to 26-9, when Crutcher hit a 3-pointer, but the Braves were able to pull away for a 34-13 lead at halftime.
The Braves opened the second half with a 8-0 run to push the score to 42-13, when Bitt knocked down a 3-pointer and then made three free throws to bring the Bulldogs withing 45-21. Owyhee pushed the advantage to 60-28 after three quarters of play and led 67-33 in the fourth quarter for its biggest lead.
The fourth quarter belonged to Villalobos, as he scored 14 of his 17 points in the final eight minutes of play. Bitt had a team-high 21 points, while Ramsey had seven points and Crutcher four.
Jackpot leads the Eastern 1A at 8-1, Wells is second at 8-2 and Owyhee is third at 7-2 and Wells is fourth at 5-5. The top four teams advance to the regional tournament to be played in Las Vegas on Feb. 20-22.
McDermitt hosts Eureka on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
