The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team traveled to Lovelock this past weekend to take back what is theirs, the Northern 2A Regional Tournament Championship.
The team race saw Battle Mountain on top of the scoreboard outdistancing second place Yerington by a score of 259.50-202.Pershing County was a distant third at 73 and Eureka (68) and Pyramid Lake (50) rounded out the top five.
“We were able to score a lot of bonus points today, and that is why we ran away with the tournament,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala.
As the wrestlers of the Division AA came together to battle it out for state tournament berths, the boys in green sent notice that they were ready to focus on their season of domination.
When the tournament came to an end and the list of entries to the Nevada State Tournament was finalized, 14 Longhorns had earned their way onto the brackets.
“The kids put together a good weekend,” Domagala said. “They started fast and just kept that pace up all day. They refused to let the competition even breath as they imposed their will on their opponents. It was an awesome sight to see.”
Eight Longhorns claimed individual titles as Declan McClary at 126 pounds, Jose Guizar (132), Stone Whitlock (152), Kasen Taylor (160), Cody Ostler (182), Brice Domagala (195), Thomas Amezcua (220) and Lyle Whitten (285) won gold medals.
McClary took down two Yerington opponents at 126 pounds, pinning Brock Bader and beating Logan Galvin 5-0 in the final.
Guizar needed to win three matches at 132 pounds to win his title. He pinned Yerington’s Aiden Fraser in 61 seconds in the quarterfinal and did the dame to Smith Valley’s Jackie Scerinie in the semifinal. Guizar earned a 17-2 win over Yerington’s Jonah Eriksen in the final.
Whitlock won his first two matches by pin over Owyhee’s Lance Owyhee and Yerington’s Logan Davis. The freshman beat Pershing County’s Nikita Pavlov 4-2 in the final.
At 160 pounds. Kasen Taylor beat teammate Asher Bundrock in the semifinals and Yerington’s Justin Barnes 7-5 in the championship.
Cody Ostler was on the mat for less than 95 seconds on the day at 182 pounds. He beat Wells’ Pete Casas in the semifinals in 33 seconds and Independence’s Carlos Morales in the final in 61 seconds.
Brice Domagala won both his matches by pin at 195 pounds, beating Independence’s Aric Tarver and Smith Valley’s Owen Streeter.
Thomas Amezcua reached the final of the 220-pound weight class with pins over Pyramid Lake’s Joey Chavez and Yerington’s Ryon Hoggard. He beat Donovan Goedhals of Excel Christian in the championship by a 10-6 decision.
Lyle Whitten wrestled just the championship match and pinned Pyramid Lake’s Joel (Aaron) Chavez in 36 seconds.
Sean Scherer (106), Jordan Gonzalez (138), Jose “B” Guizar (145) and Dalton Shake (170) finished in the runner-up spot. Julio Torres (120) and Asher Bundrock (160) took third place and Tyler Rochester (220) captured fifth place.
Alex Jones secured sixth place and also wrestling was Anthony Silva.
The Longhorns make the long trip to Mesquite and Virgin Valley High School this weekend for the NIAA State Wrestling Championships. Wrestling starts at 3 p.m. on Friday. To find complete brackets visit www.niaa.com.
