The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team was on the road for three games last week and came home with one victory.
Battle Mountain headed east on Interstate 80 on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and suffered a 51-49 loss in overtime to the Leopards.
The Lady Longhorns doubled up the Leopards 14-7 in the first eight minutes of play, but Wells fought back to cut the deficit to 22-19 at halftime.
Battle Mountain once again increased the lead to six points in the third quarter, only to see Wells come back again and use a 13-7 spurt to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The Leopards held the Lady Longhorns to three points in the extra four-minute period and had to watch a last-second shot bounce off the rim to secure the non-conference win.
Zarina Ceja and Kaybrie Nield led the way with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Addi Slaybaugh added eight points, Brooke Ripley five and Christina Holley, Brynlee Freeman, Isabel Diaz and Jade Castellanos had two points each.

Pershing County
Battle Mountain was back on the road on Friday to take on rival Pershing County in Lovelock. Once again, it was a typical Battle Mountain/Pershing County contest that came down to the final seconds.
The Lady Longhorns led by two points at halftime and the score remained close to the end. The game was tied in the final minute when Pershing County used a steal and layup to secure the win.
Nield had 14 points and nine rebounds and Ceja added six points and four assists.
“It was your typical back-and-forth game,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “They made some plays at the end and we did not. The girls played hard and we had our chances. We have been struggling at the free throw line and it caught up to us in this game.”

Battle Mountain moved to Silver Springs on Saturday afternoon and got off to a slow start against Silver Stage.
The Nighthawks jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Longhorns responded in the second quarter to take a one-point advantage at halftime.
Battle Mountain pulled away in the second half with a 28-14 to avoid the upset loss.
Brooke Ripley had a team-high 11 points, with Slaybaugh adding eight points, nine rebounds and three steals. Diaz also had eight points.
“We got off to a slow start and trailed after the first quarter,” added the coach. “Interesting that free throws were the difference again. We shot 16-of-22, our best free throw percentage of the year. The girls are doing a lot of things better. We need to keep improving as we get closer to the regional tournament.”
Battle Mountain is tied for fourth in the Northern 2A at 7-5 with Pershing County. Each team has beaten each other this year. Incline leads the league at 11-1, with Yerington and White Pine tied for second at 10-2.
Silver Stage (3-8) currently holds the final playoff berth in sixth. The top six teams qualify for the Northern 2A Regional Championships in Lovelock on Feb. 20-22. The top two reams receive first-round byes.
Battle Mountain closes out its home schedule this weekend, hosting West Wendover on Friday at 6 p.m. and White Pine on Saturday at 2 p.m.
