RENO — Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Mumme has been named a candidate for the 2020 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coaches.
The 56 nominees in this year’s class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division One programs across the country.
The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
Now in his fourth year at Nevada, Mumme has developed the Wolf Pack’s offense into one of the most lethal in the nation this year as Nevada is second in the conference, and 28th nationally, in total offense.
The Wolf Pack has scored more touchdowns (26) than any other Mountain West team this year.
Mumme, who also coaches quarterbacks, has developed sophomore quarterback Carson Strong into a candidate for Mountain West Player of the Year this year.
The Broyles Award was created in 1996 recognizing Coach Frank Broyles’ legacy of selecting and developing great assistants during his hall of fame career as head coach at Arkansas.
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.
The winner of the 2019 Broyles Award was Joe Brady, passing game coordinator at LSU. Previous winners are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award until the completion of three seasons.
