The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s (NIAA) office staff received official notification last week from the Clark County School District’s athletics and activities office that CCSD-member schools, with the exception of Moapa Valley High School, will not be participating in the winter season sports of (boys & girls) basketball, (boys & girls) bowling, flag football and wrestling.
The announcement does not pertain to fall season or spring season sports.
Moapa Valley has been the only CCSD-school conducting a model of in-person learning.
With the decision, the 5A, 4A and 3A Southern regions will be significantly impacted this upcoming season.
The 2A and 1A Southern regions are still mostly intact (without Indian Springs, Sandy Valley and Spring Mountain).
Washoe County was set to decide on Dec. 8 to go ahead with winter sports or follow in line with Clark County.
If Washoe County decides to cancel the winter sports season that would leave Bishop Manogue, Carson and Douglas as the only schools in the Northern 5A.
Bishop Manogue is in Reno, but is a private school.
Bishop Manogue, Carson and Douglas have inquired about possibly playing in the 3A if Washoe County cancel the winter sports season.
The six Northern 3A schools left would be Lowry, Elko, Spring Creek, Fallon, Dayton and Fernley.
North Valleys, Sparks, Wooster and Hug are the four Northern 3A schools in Washoe County.
It is not known if Truckee and South Tahoe would be allowed to play.
It must be noted that basketball and wrestling are still on the governor’s “no play” list at this time.
The NIAA office staff will be figuring out which non-CCSD schools remain open to participate in the winter sports season and how to amend leagues as needed in the 5A, 4A and 3A.
If Washoe County cancels the season that would take away Incline from the Northern 2A schedule.
North Tahoe is in Tahoe City, Calif., and it’s not known if they would be able to play a 2A schedule as well.
