Winter realignment set for high school winter sports

The NIAA realignment committee held its latest meeting on April 9 and recommended changes for winter sports for high schools in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years.

The Northern 3A will feature 12 teams and two leagues for boys and girls basketball.

The East Division will be comprised of Churchill County (Fallon), Dayton, Elko, Fernley, Lowry and Spring Creek.

The West Division includes Hug, North Valleys. South Tahoe, Sparks, Truckee and Wooster.

Lowry will play each of its East rivals twice in the league schedule and will face the West teams once.

The Buckaroos will play three West teams at home and three on the road and those games will rotate over the two-year realignment cycle.

The Northern 3A wrestling league will feature the same 12 teams, but will be one league.

The one change made at the realignment meeting was keeping North Valleys in the 3A and Galena in the 5A. The original proposal had North Valleys in the 5A and Galena in the 3A.

The 3A South in boys basketball will be divided into two divisions as well.

The Desert League includes Boulder City, Cadence, Pahrump Valley, SECTA and SLAM Academy.

The Mountain League is comprised of Equipo, Moapa Valley, Sky-Pointe, Somerset-Losee and Virgin Valley.

The 3A South in girls basketball will look a little different.

The Mountain League will be made up of Moapa Valley, Virgin Valley, Somerset-Losee, Del Sol, Sky Pointe and Equipo*.

The Desert League includes Boulder City, Pahrump Valley, SLAM Academy, SECTA, Eldorado and Cadence*. It’s not known at this time if Equipo and Cadence will field teams.

The state tournament format will remain the same for the next realignment cycle, with the top two teams from the North and South advancing after the regional tournament.

The 3A South will have 10 teams in wrestling including Boulder City, Chaparral, Del Sol, Desert Oasis, Eldorado, Moapa Valley, Pahrump Valley, Sunrise Mountain, Valley and Virgin Valley.

The regional and state tournaments will remain the same as they have been. The state tournament will take the top four wrestlers from each weight class in the North and South.

For the 2020 state cross country championships, the top four teams in the North and South will qualify for the state meet.

The top seven individuals on non-qualifying teams also advance to the state championships.

For boys and girls golf, the top three teams in the North and South qualify for the state championship and the top six qualifiers on non-qualifying teams advance to state.

The 1A realignment for the Eastern 1A will remain the same for volleyball, boys and girls basketball and track and field. The league will include Carlin, Eureka, Wells, Owyhee, Independence, McDermitt and Jackpot.

The East 1A football league will have Carlin, Eureka, Wells, Owyhee and Independence.

McDermitt will also play in the East, if can field a football team. The Bulldogs did not field a team in 2019.

The Western 1A will feature 10 teams for volleyball, basketball and track and field and six for football. The 1A will combine with the 2A in boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country and wrestling.

The Northern 2A will see a slight change, with White Pine moving to the Southern 2A, except in boys and girls soccer.

The Northern 2A football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball leagues will include Battle Mountain, Coral Academy-Reno, Incline, North Tahoe, Pershing County, Silver Stage, West Wendover and Yerington.

West Wendover will be a member of the Southern 2A in cross country, golf, wrestling and track and field, with the other seven Northern 2A teams remaining.

The Northern 2A soccer league will be made up of Battle Mountain, Incline, North Tahoe, Pershing County (girls only), West Wendover, White Pine, Whittell, Yerington and Sage Ridge (boys only). Sage Ridge was an independent in 2019.
