MCDERMITT — After a year’s absence, the McDermitt High School volleyball team was back on the floor for the first time since 2017, when it hosted Jordan Valley, Ore., on Thursday night.

The Lady Bulldogs feature three seniors, three freshmen and junior, along with a new coach in Teola Tom. McDermitt dropped its season opener 25-6, 21-25, 25-15 and 25-9.

The Mustangs scored 10 of the first 11 points in the opening set and rode that momentum throughout the set.

The Lady Bulldogs cut the deficit to 15-6 at one point, only to see the Mustangs score the final 10 points of the set.

McDermitt shook of the nerves in the second set and jumped out to a 4-2 lead behind a kill by Jasmine Northrup. Northrup added another kill later in the set and Meianah Bitt had a block to push the lead to 18-12.

A kill by Bitt gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of the set at 23-16 and the Lady Bulldogs held on from there.

Jordan Valley bounced back and dominated the early portion of the third set to lead 8-3, only to see McDermitt battle back within three points at 14-11 after kills by Rylee Wilkinson and Katie Crutcher. That was as close as the Lady Bulldogs got, as the Mustangs went on a 10-2 run to close out the set.

After trailing 2-1 in the fourth set, Jordan Valley scored seven points in a row and raced to the win in the fourth set.
