Lowry volleyball falls in three sets to Fernley

The Lowry High School volleyball team was back on its home floor on Wednesday night and suffered a 25-8, 25-23, 25-8 loss to Fernley and dropped to 0-5 in the Northern 3A.

Fernley scored the first seven points of the first set and increased the lead to 13-1, when Sierra Maestrejuan stopped the momentum with her first kill of the night. The Vaqueros answered back with the next four points to go in front 17-2. Maestrejuan and Carly Capellen added kills later in the set and Eva Andradottir had a tip in the open floor.

Lowry fell behind 4-1 in the second set but rallied to take a 9-6 advantage after a kill by Sandyn Johnson. Fernley countered with a 7-1 run to go in front 14-10, forcing the Lady Bucks to take a timeout. The Vaqueros did not trail again.

However, Lowry tied the set on a couple different occasions, including at 16-16 after an ace by Juliana Ruiz. The Vaqueros pulled away once more, leading 24-18, only to see the Lady Bucks score five straight points to cut the lead to 24-23. That was as close as Lowry got, with Fernley closing out the set on the next point.

Fernley took that momentum into the third set and scored 13 of the first 15 points and never looked back.
