Villanueva takes top spot in Elko girls golf tournament

For the second tournament in a row, Battle Mountain's Destiny Villanueva took home the low medalist honors at a Northern 2A tournament.

Villanueva shot an even 100 to win at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

"She shot an even 100, on the very difficult Ruby View course," said BMHS coach Jayson Cutler.

Adriana Robles carded a 122 for the Lady Longhorns and Charly Gusky shot a 130. Battle Mountain did not have enough players for a team score.

"We didn’t have enough girls to place as a team, but all the ladies played very well," Cutler said. "I was very pleased, considering the condition of the greens. They were very difficult to read and extremely fast. Ruby View typically has some of the best greens in northern Nevada and our ladies adjusted well and overcame the obstacle"

The Elko JV won on its home course with a score of 445. Wells was second at 482 and West Wendover (495) was third. The Spring Creek JV rounded out the team scores at 505.

Elko’s Julianna Lozano and  AJ Anthony tied for second and third place with matching scores  of 103. The tiebreaker was awarded to Lozano. Wells' Mackenzie Wachtel was fourth after a round of 104

The next tournament is scheduled for Thursday at Chimney Creek Golf Course in Wells.
