While almost all of Nevada high schools are well into their seasons, some playing three games, the Battle Mountain High School football team finally opened its season this past Friday night at home.
Despite it being the season-opener, Battle Mountain did not look rusty, scoring on the third play of the game en route to a 42-6 win over Silver Stage.
"It was nice to finally get that first game played and now we can move on to cleaning things up and gearing down for the rest of the season,” said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 30-0 lead after the first quarter and created a running clock two minutes into the second quarter to lead 36-0. Battle Mountain added another score by halftime to go in front 42-0.
Silver Stage scored its lone touchdown with two minutes left to go in the contest.
At his first game at quarterback, junior Aldo Castellanos was 6-of-10 passing for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Terrance Fetterly and Jose Guizar each caught a touchdown. Both players had two receptions apiece on the night. Guizar had 79 yards on the night and Fetterly 44. Cody Ostler and Kobe Lake each had one catch.
Battle Mountain gashed the Silver Stage defense for 241 yards on the night. Castellanos had 133 of those yards on just five carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run. Castellanos had three rushing touchdowns on the night.
Ostler had 10 carries for 64 yards and the other touchdown. Lake had five carries for 44 yards.
"The kids played with a lot of emotion and it showed,” added the coach. "We were able to mix up the run and the pass well and had good results with both.”
Battle Mountain travels to Reno on Saturday night to play Coral Academy at Wooster High School at 7 p.m. The Longhorns are back home to play West Wendover on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.
