Winnemucca eighth-grade girls basketball team closes out season with two wins

The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team finished its season with three games last weekend in Reno and Spring Creek.

Winnemucca was in Reno on Friday, Oct. 18, to play Shaw Middle School and suffered a 41-37 defeat. Savannah Stoker paced the Warriors with 25 points and Jackie Sanchez and Alexis Galarza each scored six points.

“This game was difficult,” said WJHS coach DaraLee Millikan. “Shots would not fall, players were on the floor much of the time and it was evident that the girls were sad because we just had our last practice the day before. We did give it a good effort, but it just wasn't to be.”

Winnemucca made its way to Spring Creek last Saturday and beat Spring Creek 1 48-10.

Stoker and Galarza led Winnemucca with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Jackie Sanchez, Bryce Brinkerhoff, Sloan Fox and Cambria Tisue had four points apiece. Autum Sanchez, Piper Nichols, Hayden Case and Maya Hernandez netted two points each.

Later in the day Winnemucca played a second Spring Creek team and won 64-9. Stoker nearly tripled Spring Creek’s total with 26 points to lead all scorers. Galarza added eight points, Autum Sanchez and Nichols had seven each, Tisue six, Fox and Brinkerhoff four each and Case two.

“We pulled it together and decided to finish strong,” Millikan said. “I told the girls we had nothing to lose.  Let's have some fun. Spring Creek is just starting their season and we are ending ours, so just relax and do what you know how to do.  It was a great weekend. This is a fantastic group of girls.”
