Nevada Rural Housing Authority and United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra Partner for the “At Home With Reading” Book Drive

Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) and United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) have partnered for the “At Home With Reading” Book Drive, benefitting the residents of NRHA’s northern Nevada affordable housing properties. The drive will take place October 15 through October 31, and books will be delivered early November to the NRHA communities, which house low-income residents, many of whom are veterans, disabled, seniors, and/or formerly homeless.

“Research shows children experiencing inadequate housing achieve significantly lower levels in reading and have less access to books,” said UWNNS CEO Michael Brazier. “We also know that children living in households where books are abundant achieve better academic performances later in life.”

The book drive is part of NRHA’s National Housing America Month activities in October and will help grow the little libraries at each of the housing authority’s affordable properties. Access to books is just one of the resources NRHA aims to provide its residents and their guests.

Humboldt County Library Director Jessica Anderson said the library plans to donate books to the drive. However, the library will be closed during the week of November 4 through Veterans Day so the drop-off location is at Ridley’s. She also said plans to install the Library’s Little Library continues to make progress, saying the first installation will likely be at one of the park’s in Winnemucca.

The NRHA properties that will receive book donations in Winnemucca are Larios Arms and Winnemucca Manor.

Humboldt County residents can help by donating books or the cost of new books. New or gently used books for all ages can be delivered to Ridley’s Family Market on 1125 W. Winnemucca Boulevard. You can donate the cost of new books online at uwnns.org/Books.
