The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team picked up three wins in four games over the last two weeks.
Winnemucca traveled to Pyramid Lake on Saturday, Sept. 28, and beat Pershing County Middle School 48-8. Savannah Stoker has 22 points in the win, while Alexis Galarza equaled the Colts total with eight.
Jackie Sanchez netted six points and Autum Sanchez, Katlyn Gomez and Miranda Draper each had four points.
In its second game, Winnemucca suffered a 26-24 defeat to Pyramid Lake. Stoker and Jackie Sanchez paced the Warriors with 10 and eight points, respectively. Cambria Tisue had four points and Galarza two.
“With 14-minute halves with a running clock, it was a scramble,” said WJHS coach DaraLee Millikan. “Pyramid played us hard and did a good job of getting us out of our game. The floor was super slick. I think we were on the floor almost half the time. But it was good for us to have to step it up.”
Winnemucca travels to McDermitt
Winnemucca made the short trip to McDermitt last Friday and picked up wins over Pershing County and Pyramid Lake.
Winnemucca knocked off Pershing County 37-8, with a balanced scoring attack.
Autum Sanchez and Stoker each had 12 points in the victory. Galarza netted five points, Jackie Sanchez four and Bryce Brinkerhoff and Gomez had two points apiece.
Winnemucca avenged its loss from the week before and beat Pyramid Lake 35-24. Stoker led all scorers with 17 points, while Brinkerhoff and Galarza each scored eight. Autum Sanchez and Draper each had two points.
“Lovelock gave us a chance to run our plays and work out a few kinks,” Millikan said. “They have a couple of girls who can put the ball in the hoop. With Pyramid, we came out ready to play this time. Pyramid really gets after it. But when we keep our heads, we control the game. The girls did everything I asked them. We play them one more time at home on the 19th. We still have a few tricks up our sleeve — looking forward to that game.”
