Lowry golfers take to home course

Even though it was a clear and sunny day in Winnemucca on Wednesday, it was not an ideal day to be on the golf course.

The Lowry High School girls golf team hosted the Northern 3A, in cold and windy conditions at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. The day before temperatures were 30 degrees warmer in Fernley.

“It was cold and windy but it could have been worse,” said LHS coach Savannah Talbott.

Angelina Martinez led the Lady Bucks on the day with a round of 100, which put her fifth overall.

Teammates Kaitlyn Hales shot a 103 and Bailey Hayes carded a 108.

Truckee’s Ryan Flynn was the low-medalist on the day with an impressive round of 75.

Elko’s Caresse Basaraba was second at 88 and South Tahoe’s Jenna Shortridge (95) was third.

Elko’s Chilz Negrete was fourth at 96 and also received the Todd Milton Sportsmanship Award. Each year at the Lowry Invitational, a golfer is chosen to be the recipient of the award. Milton was the former Lowry girls golf coach. He passed away in 2018.

Despite having its No. 1 player withdraw due to a back injury, Elko won the team title with a score of 404. Truckee was second at 414 and Spring Creek (451) was third. South Tahoe (456) and Churchill County (464) rounded out the team scores.

Hayes shoots

career-best at Fernley

Before coming to Winnemucca on Wednesday, the Northern 3A was in Fernley on Tuesday under much warmer and calmer conditions.

Hayes finished fourth overall, as the Lowry golfer shot a career-best 93. Martinez finished with a round of 106 and Hales carded a 116.

"Bailey played great," added the coach."She was happy with her score."

Flynn led the field with a 1-under par 71, while Basaraba was second at 86. Truckee’s Annika Thayer at 89.

Truckee won the tournament by two strokes over Elko (388-390).

Spring Creek (438) was third and Churchill County (465) and South Tahoe (482) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Lowry tournament was scheduled as the final tournament of the season, but the league will be in Reno on Friday to make up the canceled South Tahoe tournament.

The NIAA 3A State Championships will take place Nov. 21-22 in Boulder City at Boulder City Municipal Golf Course and Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The top three teams from the Northern 3A and top three teams from the Southern 3A qualify.  The top six individuals from non-qualifying teams also advance.

The Northern 3A does not have a postseason tournament. The south will hold its next week.

Hayes, Hale and Martinez are currently in the top six and looked poised to make the trip to Boulder City.

“I am pretty sure all three are going to qualify,” Talbott said.
