The Lowry High School volleyball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon with a straight-set victory (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) over Sparks in Winnemucca.
The Lady Bucks got off to a slow start, as the Railroaders led early at 5-4. However, a kill by Eva Andradottir and a two straight aces by Sierra Maestrejuan put the Lady Bucks in front for good at 7-5.
Two kills by Shanae Smith and one more by Isabelle Ozanick in succession started an 8-1 run that saw Lowry lead 19-8.
Reece Kalkoske and Maestrejuan capped off the run with kills of their own. Maestrejuan had thee kills in the final four points, with Destiny Starkey adding a kill as well.
The second set was tied five times in the first 16 points, but Lowry did not take its first lead until 9-8 on a Kalkoske kill. Allie Hummel followed with an ace to push the margin to two points, only to see Sparks answer with a 3-1 run to go back in front 11-10 after an ace.
Aided by a kill by Kalkoske, Lowry went on a 5-0 run to go in front 15-11 and did not trail again. The Railroaders closed within a point at 17-16, but Lowry pulled away with two kills from Smith and another by Starkey.
Sparks held the early lead in the third set at 3-2, when Ozanick and Maestrejuan provided aces to give the Lady Bucks an 8-4 advantage. The Railroaders made one last push to close the deficit to 14-12, when the Lady Bucks followed with an 7-1 to put the set out of reach.
Lowry falls to Fernley
Lowry traveled to Fernley last Thursday and suffered a 25-16, 25-16 and 25-14 loss to the Vaqueros.
Truckee leads the Northern 3A at 10-0, while South Tahoe (8-1) is second and Fernley (9-2) is third. Elko (7-3), Dayton (7-5) and Churchill County (4-5) round out the top six. Spring Creek and Lowry are tied at 3-8, with the Spartans holding the tiebreaker, due to the head-to-head victory.
The top six teams qualify for the Northern 3A Regional Championships in Truckee on Nov. 8-9. Thew top two teams receive first-round byes.
Lowry will play its final two home matches of the year this weekend, beginning with Dayton on Friday at 6 p.m. South Tahoe makes the trip to Winnemucca on Saturday for a noon start.
The Lady Bucks play their final five matches of the season on the road.
