Jessica Woods, age 29, of Carlin was given 36 months of probation and a suspended one to three year prison sentence following an attempted burglary at Players Bar in Winnemucca in July.
Woods and Shannon McCoy, age 44, of Elko were arrested following the report of a burglary at Players Bar.
When officers attempted to arrest McCoy and Woods, the couple led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase through city streets and highways that ended near I-80 mile marker 168 where the vehicle crashed into a slough off the Humboldt River.
The couple swam across the river to elude officers and were located and arrested the following morning by law enforcement. Both McCoy and Woods were charged with several charges including burglary, eluding officers and conspiracy to commit burglary.
Multiple agencies were involved in the pursuit of both suspects including the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol and MedX AirOne helicopter.
Woods pleaded guilty to eluding a police officer in a manner proposing danger to persons or property, a category B felony. Pursuant to plea negotiations, the district attorney’s office dismissed four original charges, including burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary.
Woods faced 1-6 years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine on the felony charge, with the eligibility for probation.
Woods’ attorney asked the court to allow Woods to participate in probation rather than a prison sentence. The state also asked the court to impose probation rather than prison.
“This is a 29-year old young woman who made a very bad decision to come to Winnemucca and engage in some offenses against property owners and law enforcement,” said Alternate Public Defender Maureen McQuillan. “She did take responsibility for this and entered her plea back in September and has abided by the conditions of her bail since then.”
Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Michael Montero sentenced Woods to one to three years in prison with 49 days credit for time served, suspended on the condition she successfully completes a three-year term of probation.
Woods was also ordered to pay a $153 DNA collection and analysis fee, $25 administrative assessment fee and $250 public defender fee.
In each court hearing, Montero asked if there was any victim present to make a victim impact statement and no one spoke at any of the available opportunities.
McCoy has not been sentenced in the matter, nor has he pleaded to any of the charges filed against him.
