A venue and time change did not bother the Battle Mountain High School volleyball team, as the Lady Longhorns celebrated senior day with a four-set victory at Battle Mountain Junior High School.
The match was moved to the junior high, due to no heat at the high school.
Battle Mountain started sluggish, losing the first set 25-13, but rallied to win the final three sets 25-17, 25-16 and 25-22 to finish the year at 5-11 in the Northern 2A.
North Tahoe began the match with the first four points, when Battle Mountain cut the deficit to 7-5 after an ace by Uliana Fagg and a kill by Addi Slaybaugh.
That was as close as the Lady Longhorns got, as the Lakers opened up an 18-10 advantage and cruised to the 12-point win.
Battle Mountain opened the second set with a kill from Anahi Lopez and took the lead for good at 11-5 after four kills in a five-point stretch by Isabel Diaz. Kira Smith and Carlee Petersen added aces and a kill by Fagg increased the lead to 15-6. The Lakers closed the gap to 20-15, but got no closer as Fagg ended the set with a kill.
North Tahoe rebounded with the first three points of the third set, when Battle Mountain answered with five points in a row, capped off by a kill by Fagg. The back-and-forth set saw the Lakers go a head 11-7, with Battle Mountain rallying to tie the set at 11 after two kills by Slaybaugh and a kill by Lopez.
The set was tied one last time at 12, when Brynnlee Freeman and Slaybaugh scored back-to-back kills.
An ace by Lopez forced North Tahoe to take a timeout trailing 18-13 and Smith closed out the set with three aces.
Battle Mountain opened up a 13-8 advantage in the fourth set after a block by Lopez and Slaybaugh. North Tahoe rallied to tie the set at 17, when Diaz put the Lady Longhorns ahead 20-17 after two kills by Diaz.
However, the Lakers were not done, fighting back to tie the set at 22. Battle Mountain went ahead 24-22 on a kill by Slaybaugh and won the match on a miss hit by North Tahoe.
Battle Mountain hosted Incline on Friday night and suffered a four-set loss to the Highlanders.
The Northern 2A Regional Championships are Friday and Saturday in Yerington. North Tahoe/Pershing County play at 6:45 p.m. on Friday with the winner playing Yerington on Saturday at 10 a.m. In the other half of the bracket, White Pine plays Silver Stage at 5 p.m. on Friday. That winner plays Incline on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The championship is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The two finalists travel to the NIAA 2A State Championships on Nov. 15-16 at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas.
