A portion of the Lowry High School cross country team was in Spring Creek on Thursday, Oct. 24, for the Northeast Nevada JV championships.
“We had a very nice day of racing,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “It was beautiful weather on a difficult course.”
Freshman Taylor Hawkins posted a third-place finish on the girls side with a time of 24 minutes, 22.19 seconds.
Spring Creek’s Mariah Cooper won the race at 23:49.73 and teammate Brandi Manhire (24:18.37) was second.
Lowry’s Ryleigh Raabe was 10th in the race with a time of 26:34.10.
Hawkins and Raabe were the only Lady Bucks in the race. Spring Creek was the only team to post a team total with 15 points.
“The JV girls had a great day of running,” Norcutt said. “Taylor had an impressive run. She was very tough and the top three finishers had a race to the end. She was very focused and ran a smart race. Ryleigh battled back-and-forth with Spring Creek until the very end where she was just out-kicked. She was mentally tough throughout the race.”
Both Hawkins and Raabe will run at the regional meet on Saturday, giving the Lowry girls a full squad.
Junior Erick Prado led the Buckaroo boys with a 29th-place finish in a personal-best time of 21:30.44.
Tyler Morrison was 31st at 21:47.58 and Tyler Carpenter (22:22.11) was 34th.
“The boys ran well also,” added the coach. “They worked incredibly hard. The field was deep with a lot of Spring Creek athletes, as they had a large squad of runners.”
Jackpot sophomore Hector Ontiveros won the race with a time of 17:46.92. Spring Creek had the next eight runner cross the finish line to win the team title with 15 points. Elko finished second at 50.
Lowry is in Reno on Saturday for the Northern 3A Regional Championships at Rancho San Rafael Park.
