LAS VEGAS — The Battle Mountain High School track and field team closed out its season this past weekend at the NIAA State Championships at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas.
The Longhorns brought home one individual title, with Cody Ostler winning the triple jump. The junior broke through the 43 foot barrier and had a personal-best leap of 43 feet, 1 inch to win by over a foot over Yerington’s Donavan Coplin.
In addition, Ostler placed seventh in the long jump at 18-2.75. Incline’s Brayden Snearly won the event with a leap of 20-0.25.
Senior Tristin Cordingley was second in the shot put with a toss of 42.4.50. Sebastian Juarez from Coral Academy Science of Reno won with a toss of 44-3.
Isaiah Powell was seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 53.47. Lincoln County’s Noah Smith beat White Pine’s Ezekiel Vinson (51.01-51.04) for the state title.
The 4x100 relay of Aldo Castellanos, Marcus Jury, Powell and Ostler were third with a time of 45.77. Calvary Chapel took the top spot with a time of 44.81 and Laughlin was second at 45.73.
The 4x200 relay of Cesar Tovar, Austin Wilkins, Jury and Ostler were fourth at 1:37.95. Calvary Chapel and Yerington, were first and second, respectively.
The Longhorns were ninth in the team standings with 32 points. White Pine won the state championship with 117.50 points and Coral Academy was second at 83. North Tahoe (82), Incline (76) and Yerington (70.50) rounded out the top five.
Battle Mountain had two girls compete at the state championships and both were in the pole vault. Sruti Bhakta finished third in her final track meet, clearing the bar at 7-6. Sophomore Anahi Lopez was fifth with a mark of 6-6.
The Lady Longhorns were ninth in the team standings with 10 points. White Pine ran away with the team title with 206 points and North Tahoe was second at 136.
