Maggie Creek HAZMAT crash

On Wednesday, May 15th, 2019, at approximately 1415 hours, The Eureka County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Carlin Police Department, Carlin Fire & Rescue, and NDOT were called to SR 766, near MM3 in Eureka County, for a Semi Rollover HazMat incident.

Upon our arrival, we found a Cecil Trucking, double tanker semi was involved. Initial investigation shows the driver, Hilberto Medrano, was traveling North on SR766, near MM3 when he failed to negotiate a curve. Medrano left the roadway on the northern shoulder.

Medrano lost control of the semi, which caused it to tip over, and roll down the embankment, into Maggie Creek.

The semi was carrying over 5,000 gallons of Sulfuric Acid. At least one of the tankers were breached in the crash, causing Sulfuric Acid to be leaked into Maggie Creek.

Medrano was transported to NNRH via Ambulance, where he was later released with minor injuries.

NHP Troopers and NHP Commercial Unit are handling the Crash Investigation.

The US Environmental Protection Agency are on scene and monitoring the Maggie Creek Contamination and Exposure.

Crews are still on scene. SR 766 will remain closed until further notice, most likely lasting until the afternoon of the 16th.

ECSO would like to extend our greatest appreciation for the assistance from all those involved in today’s incident.

Newmont & Barrick Mine Rescue and HazMat teams responded and were instrumental in the containment and mitigation of the breach.
