LAS VEGAS — The Lowry High School track and field team made the long trip to Las Vegas and Desert Oasis High School, this past weekend for the NIAA State Championships.
Rachel Garrison turned in the best finish on the girls side, with two third-place finishes. The senior had a throw of 34 feet, 7.7-50 inches in the shot put and 116-2 in the discus.
Fellow senior and thrower, Heather Hall, set a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 33-11.75 to place fourth.
Becca Kuskie turned in a season-best time of 5:22.32 to finish fourth in the 1,600 meters. The senior placed fifth in the 3,200 meters stopping the clock at 12:26.99.
Freshman Emily Backus took part in three events, with her best finish coming in the long jump and 200 meters. Backus set a personal best in the long jump at 15-11.50 and she ran the 200 meters at 26.71. She was sixth in the 100-meter dash at 13.00.
Freshman Jovi Kuskie placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles, after taking up the event in the latter part of the season. She had a time of 49.10.
Fellow freshman Kenzi Petersen was sixth in the high jump, as she cleared the bar at 4-8.
A year after winning its first team state championship, the Lowry girls tied for sixth with Del Sol with 42 points. Spring Creek won the team title with 137 points and Truckee was second at 97.
On the boys side, Colby Terry had the best finish for Lowry, placing third in the pole vault at 11-0. Fellow junior Jasper Glasgow placed fourth in both throwing events with personal bests. Glasgow threw the discus 135-9 and the shot put 44-6.50.
Senior Will Kracaw was fifth in the 3,200 meters, setting a personal-best time of 10:08.16 in his final high school race. Sophomore Anthony Peterson was sixth in the long jump at 19-7 and junior Kevin Warren was seventh in the high, as he cleared the bar at 5-10.
The Lowry boys were 13th in the team standings with 28 points. Mojave on the state championship with 122 points and Sparks was second with 68.50 points.
