Buckaroo golfers finish fifth at NIAA 3A state tournament

The Lowry High School golf team qualified for the NIAA 3A State Tournament in Genoa Lakes that was held May 13-14, but they took the final spot in their last match of the year.

The Buckaroo boys shot a 360 in each of the two rounds to card a 720 in the championships.

They finished behind Truckee (622) who scored 312 and 310 to rally from a two-stroke deficit to Boulder City after the first day.

Boulder City (639) started with a 312 team score, but they dropped to 329 in the second round to finish second. Pahrump Valley (681) went 340 and 341, and South Tahoe (683) was 337 and 346.

“The state tournament was a good time by all," said LHS coach Andrew Meyer. "We had good efforts from some of our first time state participants. Caden (Rorex) shot his career low at state, a great place to post your personal best.”

Western’s Jared Smith fired his second straight 3-under-par 69 at Genoa Lakes to win the Class 3A individual title.

Smith finished with a 36-hole total of 138 to win by six strokes over Boulder City’s Blake Schaper, who shot a 75 on Tuesday.

Truckee’s Ethan Flynn was third with 150, and teammates Gabe Smith (155) and Jack Brown (157) rounded out the top five.

“The outcome was not what we hoped for but still the boys played hard and seemed to have fun doing it," Meyer said. "Dillon (Patterson) had a fairly solid performance to end his high school career for Lowry.”

Patterson (167) was the low Buckaroo at state shooting an 86 and dropping it to an 81 on the second day.

Rorex (179) went from 92 to 87, Kobe Stoker (186) was 87, 99, Max Mavity (188) was 95, 93, Cal Peters (212) carded a 108 and a 104, and Hunter Mullins (214) finished with a 113 and 101.

“As a coach I was proud of this team and their efforts this season," added the coach. "If anything, a last place team finish at state will wake our team up and show them how much effort needs to be put into the off season for us to be competitive next year.  We have a young team and golf is a sport that you get out what you put in. It is time for the Buckaroos to put in the efforts and bring the pain next season.”
