The Fitness Zone Gym from Winnemucca took competitors to Reno for a combination power-lifting/body-building competition last month.
Mark Andrews has been a personal trainer for the Fitness Zone for over 20 years.
“In the last competition, I went with three of my clients for the body-building show," Andrews said.. "I have been competing since 2014, and I have done seven body-building shows since then. I placed first in the Masters 50-Plus at the last event, and as an older competitor you can move down and compete against the younger guys. I did, and I took 4th out of eight in the 40-Plus also.”
Andrews said, “Everyone that went from Winnemucca came away with two medals, and there were more than four hundred competitors there. Chris Minnes is the promoter of these shows, and he puts on a big show for the crowd every time he puts on an event. It is not just body building, they had some arm-wrestling championships and some former Mrs. Olympias did their routines. It is almost like a circus environment, there is a lot of different entertainment going on.”
Locals made the trip to support the folks from Humboldt County and Andrews was appreciative, saying, “There were about 15 people from Winnemucca there to watch in the audience. I think that everyone should come and see one of these events because people really work hard to get ready for them. They put in 12-16 weeks to get in tip-top condition. A lot of people see the final product on stage; but they don’t understand the journey that it takes to get there for that one minute on stage.”
