The McDermitt High School track and field team traveled to Fallon and Churchill County High School this past weekend for the Northern 1A Rergional Championships.

After a number of strong performances, the Bulldogs will be sending several athletes off to the state championships as a result.

Junior Ben Draunidalo won the 100 meters in 11.40 seconds, and he also took the 200 meters with a personal record time of 23.83 seconds.

“We started out really well on the first day of this meet," said MHS coach Richard Egan. "We have some kids who have really shined, but overall as a team everybody stepped up and did well.”

Draunidalo teamed up with Jagger Hinkey, Robert Pope, and Alex Navarro for a bronze finish (47.78) in the 4x100 relay.

“We are going to focus on our relay hand-offs for state next week,” Egan said.

Navarro, a freshman, also set a personal best on his way to winning the 800 meters with a time of 2 :15.04 to move on to the state championships.

Andrew Villalobos had a personal-best time of 2:24.70 to finish in sixth place in the 800 meters.

Hinkey took second in the shot put (40-02), the discus (122-11), and also the triple jump (37-04.5), setting personal bests in the two latter events.

The Bulldogs finished third in the team standings with 76 points.

Sierra Lutheran won the team title with 135 points and Mineral County (95) was second.

“This was a nice regional meet,” Egan said. “I think our kids deserve a lot of credit for their behavior at the meet and in the community.”
