Bhakta, Cordingley, Ostler win regional titles for Battle Mountain

Battle Mountain’s Sruti Bhakta and Tristin Cordingley took home individual titles at the Northern 2A Regional Championships last weekend at Churchill County High School in Fallon.

Bhakta, a senior, set a personal best in the pole vault at 8 feet to win the event. Bhakta added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, with a personal-best leap of 28 feet, 9 inches. She set another personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 13.89 seconds. She will head to Las Vegas for the state championships in the pole vault.

Sophomore Anahi Lopez qualified for the state championships in the pole vault, as she placed third with a mark of 6-6. Lopez added an eight-place finish in the discus with a personal-best throw of 78-2.

Freshman Diane Drown ran personal bests in the 100 meters (14.88) and 200 meters (32.90).

The Lady Longhorns finished seventh in the team standings with 25 points. 

North Tahoe claimed the regional title with 163 points and Incline was second with 147 points. Pershing County (113), Coral Academy (103) and Yerington (78) rounded out the top five.

On the boys side, Cordingley set a personal best in the shot put at 45-5 to win the event, The senior was sixth in the discus at 122-8, another personal best.

Cody Ostler is headed to state in the triple jump and long jump. The junior won the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet and was fourth in the long jump at 18-6.25.

Isaiah Powell placed third in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 53.71. In addition, Powell was seventh in the long jump at 17-11. Aldo Castellanos finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 38.5-25.

Two Battle Mountain relay teams qualified for state as well. The 4x100 relay of Austin Wilkins, Marcus Jury, Powell and Ostler were third with a time of 46.76. The 4x200 relay of Powell, Cesar Tovar, Jury and Ostler were fourth in a time of 1:38.76.

Ryan Manning finished eighth in the pole vault, as he cleared the bar at 8-0 and Kobe Lake was ninth in the shot put with a toss of 38 feet.

Battle Mountain finished sixth in the team standings with 56 points.

Coral Academy won the team title with 136 points. North Tahoe was a close second at 135 and Yerington (127) and Incline (117) were third and fourth, respectively.

Battle Mountain travels to Las Vegas this weekend for the NIAA State Championships at Desert Oasis High School.
