Battle Mountain’s Max Villanueva and Avry Tucker qualified for the NIAA 2A State Boys Golf Championship that took place Monday and Tuesday at Toana Vista Golf Course in West Wendover.
Results were unavailable at press time.
The two Longhorn golfers took part in the Northern 2A Regional Championships on Monday, May 6, in Carson City and Sunridge Golf Course.
Battle Mountain did not take its full team. Villanueva shot 103 on the day and Tucker carded a 113.
“Because of new qualifying rules set by the NIAA this year, we couldn't take our entire team to compete,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “Max and Avry qualified based on their season averages being below 110. Both Max and Avry played well on a tough course they had never seen before. As a freshman, Max qualifying for the state tournament as an individual is a huge honor.”
North Tahoe won the regional title with a team score of 353, to beat second-place Incline by four shots. Whittell was the final team to qualify for state, shooting 383 to place third. Sage Ridge (398) and Sierra Lutheran (418) rounded out the team scores.
North Tahoe’s Murphy Scott was the low medalist at 75, while Sage Ridge’s Spencer Updahl was second at 80. Incline’s Satchel Hirsch (83) was third and North Tahoe’s Everett Grass and Incline’s Matt Poalillo (88) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Longhorns compete at Spring Creek
Battle Mountain closed out the regular season on Thursday, May 2, at Spring Creek.
Villanueva tied for fourth in the individual race with a round of 95. Tucker carded a 104, Brice Domagala 106 and Chris Taylor 131.
“This was our second best team score of the year,” Wallock said. “It was nice to see our improvement as the year went on. Max played well on a tough walking course that he had never played before.”
