The Winnemucca Events Complex was the site of the Nevada High School Rodeo last weekend and 18 different clubs came to compete.
This event has been going on in Winnemucca since 1957 and 140 kids came to compete this year.
Danyelle Draper was a fan at the event
“My little sisters run in the rodeo club, and I did the high school rodeo for seven years," Draper said. "It is a fun event to get kids interested in it. This is my first year in college at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, Colo., and I am home for the summer. The breakaway is my favorite event because I am good at it. You rope a calf and then your rope breaks away from your saddle horn and you get a time. I have grown up doing it and it is fun, I like it.”
Events that were held during the rodeo included breakaway, saddle bronc, bareback, steer wrestling, chute dogging, bull riding, goat tying, team roping, pole bending, ribbon roping, and tie down.
Thirteen year-old Miranda Draper from Winnemucca was one of the contestants
“I am here to support my club and get some practice in for next year. I do goat tying, team roping and breakaway," said Miranda Draper. "I probably like breakaway the best; when you catch it (the calf) it just feels good. This is my second year. Hopefully I want to make it to nationals next year.”
The high school rodeo continues in Wells on May 10-12 and the state finals will be held in Las Vegas on May 24-28.
