The Lowry High School swim team went to the Northwest Pool in Reno last weekend and the boys took down both of its opponents, while the girls managed to split at the meet.
The boys dispatched Sparks 110-57 and North Tahoe 103-58, and the girls were victorious over Sparks 38-14, but they fell to North Tahoe 151-32.
“This weekend was a mixed bag in terms of results," said LHS coach Shelby Ruff. "Toward the end of the season it’s harder to make big time drops simply because you’re back in peak condition and have to push beyond your previous limits. The team did a good job moving forward with everyone maintaining or improving on personal bests.”
Charles Gonin won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 25.23 seconds and the 500 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 45.72 seconds.
“Charles broke the school record in the 500 freestyle," Ruff said. The previous record had been held by Ryan Owens since 2000.”
Gonin also teamed up for gold with Tristan Miller, Hunter Lewis, and Evan Jeppsen in the 200-meter medley relay (2:02.32), while Miller paired with Matthew Lizanetz, Ashton Kalkoske, and Aidan Maher to win the 200 meters relay (1:51.89).
Lewis (1:05.73) won the 100 meters backstroke, Maher (2:13.30) took the 200-meter freestyle and Lizanetz triumphed in both the 200-meter individual medley (2:32.40) and 100 butterfly (1:06.93).
Miller (2:19.22) was second in the 200-meter freestyle and 500-meter free (6:10.22), Lewis took silver (58.73) in the 100 meters freestyle, and Maher (6:12.47) won bronze in the 500 meters free.
Kalkoske was third (2:22.89) in the 200 meter free and the 100 meter free (1:02.83), while Jeppsen finished third in the 50 meter free (28.27) and fourth (1:06.73) in the 100 meter free.
The girls' top finisher was Grady Mackie, who finished first in the 500 meters freestyle with a time of 7:43.84. Tara Higley (8:06.73) finished second in the 500 and also in the 200 meters individual medley (3:43.10).
Adaya Goldblatt took bronze in both the 200-meter freestyle (2:39.44) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:18.74).
“The team is working on mastering their pacing and technique as they rest up for the regional meet this weekend," Ruff said. "Charles and Hunter are both seeded in the top four for their individual events and many of the other athletes are in a good position to make finals.”
Lowry is competing at the Northern 3A Regional Championships in Carson City this weekend.
